Munnar
is one of the most sought after tourist destinations of south India
located in the Indian state of Kerala. Munnar is located at an altitude
of about 5000 - 8000 ft above sea level in Idukki district. It was one
of the most sought after summer destinations of the British rulers
during the pre-independence era. The name Munnar is derived from two
Tamil words Munu (three) and aaru (river). The name refers to the
location of Munnar at the confluence of three rivers namely
Muthirappuzha, Chandavurai and Kundaly. Munnar has vast expansions of
tea plantations, mesmerizing valleys, mountains and promises much more.
It was earlier almost entirely occupied by the Tata tea company.
Subsequently, after Tata's withdrawal it was transferred to a syndicate
by the name Kannan Devan Hills Plantation Corporation Ltd. Today Tata
only looks after the marketing of the tea produced under the brand name
Kannan Devan. Munnar was declared a tourist spot by the government of
Kerala in 2000. Because of its wildlife sanctuaries Munnar attracts
tourists from all over the world. Some of the famous wild life
sanctuaries of Munnar are Chinnar Wildlife sanctuary, Eravikulam
National Park, Anamudi Shola National Park etc. Some of the other places
of tourist interest are Mattupetty, Pothamedu, Devikulam etc.
Munnar enjoys a healthy climate through out the year. During summers
the temperature is around 25 °C while the minimum temperature is
15.2°C. However, winters are chilly and cold with temperatures
dropping as low as 0°C. The best time to visit Munnar is during the
months of September to May when the weather is at its best. Munnar is
also ideal for trekking as there are many hills and mountains surrounded
by lush green rainforests. Relax your mind and soul by exploring the
